Holi is a vibrant and colorful festival, known as the “Festival of Colors” celebrated primarily in India. Holi is celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Phalguna, which usually falls in February or March on the Gregorian calendar. The festival lasts for two days, with the main celebrations taking place on the second day known as “Rang Wali Holi” or “Dhulandi.” Holi is a time of joy, colors, and togetherness, where people come together to celebrate the spirit of unity and love. It is a festival that brings people closer, transcending boundaries and spreading happiness and positivity.
On the evening of Holi, called Chhoti or Small Holi people gather at important crossroads and light huge bonfires, the ceremony is called Holika Dahan. To render gratefulness to Agni, God of Fire, gram, and stalks from the harvest are also offered to Agni with all humility. Ash left from this bonfire is also considered sacred and people apply it on their foreheads. People believe that the ash protects them from evil forces.
In Udaipur, the special Holika Dahan Festival is celebrated in the City Palace courtyard with the Royal Family. The royal entourage with elegantly bedecked horses and royal band leads the procession through the Palace from the Shambhu Niwas Palace to Manek Chowk.

As dusk approaches, the religious ceremonies begin, and tourists can look forward to the lighting of a traditional sacred fire where an effigy of the fraudulent Holika is burnt. Local folks perform Gair, a traditional dance specially performance to pull tourists on to these spectacular celebrations.
Next day Great excitement can be seen in people when it is the time for the play of colors. Bright colors of gulal and abeer fill the air and people take turns in pouring color water over each other. Children take special delight in spraying colors on one another with their pichkaris and throwing water balloons and passers-by. Women and senior citizen form groups called tolis and move in colonies – applying colors and exchanging greetings. Songs, dance to the rhythm of dholak and mouth-watering Holi delicacies are the other highlights of the day. After that to enjoy Holi, we proceed to an Indian Family and play with colors at home.
